Full-Day Fishing Bonanza on the Chesapeake Bay

Ready for a day of non-stop fishing action on the Chesapeake? JLS Light Tackle Guide Service has you covered with our full-day inshore fishing trip. We're talking 8+ hours of chasing some of the Bay's most sought-after gamefish. Whether you're after bull reds, monster stripers, or hard-fighting cobia, we've got the local know-how to put you on the fish. Our seasoned captains know these waters like the back of their hand, and they're itching to share their hotspots with you.

What's in Store for You

Picture this: You're cruising the Chesapeake's rich waters at dawn, rod in hand, ready for anything. Our full-day trip gives you the flexibility to target multiple species and adapt to what's biting. We might start by trolling for stripers, switch to sight-casting for cobia, then finish up with some light tackle action for Spanish mackerel. It's all about maximizing your time on the water and putting fish in the boat. And don't worry if you're new to this – our guides are patient teachers who'll have you fishing like a pro in no time.

Gearing Up for Success

We're all about light tackle fishing here – it's in our name, after all. Expect to use a mix of spinning and baitcasting gear, matched to whatever we're chasing that day. We might throw soft plastics for reds, live-line spot for stripers, or work topwater lures for bluefish. Our boats are decked out with top-notch electronics to help us find the fish, and we always carry a variety of bait and lures to match the hatch. Don't sweat the gear – we've got you covered with quality rods, reels, and tackle. Just bring your game face and be ready to reel 'em in.

Top Catches This Season

The Chesapeake's been on fire lately. We've had anglers battling 40"+ striped bass, hauling in bull redfish over 50 pounds, and landing cobia pushing the 60-pound mark. One group even hit the inshore slam last week – striper, red drum, and cobia all in one trip. That's the kind of day we're aiming for every time we hit the water. And let's not forget the Spanish mackerel blitzes – when those speedsters start busting bait on the surface, it's non-stop action that'll leave your arms sore and your face grinning.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Striped Bass: The undisputed king of the Chesapeake. These powerful fish can top 50 pounds and put up a fight you won't soon forget. Spring and fall are prime time for trophy stripers, but we catch 'em year-round. Nothing beats the thrill of a big striper crushing a topwater lure at dawn.

Redfish (Red Drum): When the bulls roll in, hold onto your hat. These copper-colored bruisers can tip the scales at over 50 pounds. We target them spring through fall, with the best action often in late summer and early fall. Sight-casting to schools of reds in shallow water is an adrenaline rush like no other.

Cobia: The "man in the brown suit" is a summer visitor that packs a punch. These curious fish often swim right up to the boat, giving you a shot at sight-casting to a true trophy. They're fast, strong, and known for spectacular aerial displays when hooked. Peak season is June through August.

Spanish Mackerel: Speed demons of the Bay, Spanish macks are here in force during the summer months. Light tackle and fast retrieves are the key to success with these toothy critters. When they're blitzing on the surface, the action is fast and furious – perfect for keeping kids and new anglers engaged.

Bluefish: The bad boys of the Bay, blues are all attitude and sharp teeth. They'll hit just about anything that moves and fight well above their weight class. We see them from spring through fall, with the biggest choppers showing up in late summer. Pound for pound, they're some of the hardest fighting fish in the Chesapeake.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

It's not just about the fish – though that's a big part of it. Our full-day trips give you a chance to really experience the Chesapeake Bay. You might see ospreys diving for fish, dolphins playing in the wake, or even a sea turtle coming up for air. And there's something special about spending a day on the water with good company, swapping stories and making memories. Our repeat customers tell us it's the combination of great fishing, knowledgeable guides, and the beauty of the Bay that keeps them coming back year after year.

Time to Book Your Spot

If you're itching to get out on the Chesapeake and tangle with some serious fish, our full-day trip is calling your name. We've got the local knowledge, the right gear, and the passion to make your day on the water unforgettable. Whether you're a seasoned angler looking to tick some species off your list or a family wanting to create lasting memories, we've got you covered. Don't let another fishing season slip by – give Captain Ron a call at 717-446-4218 to check availability and lock in your date. The fish are biting, and we're ready to put you on 'em. Let's make some fishing magic happen on the Chesapeake Bay!

Learn more about the species

Bluefish

Bluefish are the Bay's bad boys - all attitude and teeth. Most run 2-5 pounds, but choppers over 10 pounds aren't uncommon. You'll find them terrorizing bait schools from the surface down to about 20 feet. Summer and early fall are peak seasons. Blues are known for their aggressive strikes and chomping through lines - use wire leaders! Their strong-flavored meat is great smoked or in dips. To get into a blitz, look for birds diving and bait fish jumping. Cast metal lures or topwater poppers into the fray and hang on. Pro tip: when blues are feeding hard, try "walking the dog" with a Zara Spook - the erratic action drives them crazy. Just watch your fingers when unhooking these toothy critters!

Bluefish

Cobia

Cobia are bruisers that'll make your drag scream. They average 30-50 pounds but can top 100. You'll spot them cruising just under the surface near buoys, wrecks, and other structure. Late spring through summer is peak season as they migrate up the Bay. Cobia put up a brutal, dogged fight - be ready for long runs and powerful dives. Their firm, white meat is prized for its sweet flavor too. To land one, try sight-casting live eels or large bucktail jigs. A pro tip: once you spot a cobia, cast well ahead of it and let your bait sink. They're curious fish and will often investigate a lure that lands near them. Just be ready when they hit - it's like hooking a freight train!

Cobia

Redfish

Redfish are one of the Bay's most exciting catches. Most run 20-30 inches, but bull reds can top 40 inches and 30 pounds. Look for them in shallow flats and oyster bars, often with their backs exposed out of the water. Fall is prime time as they school up to spawn. Reds are known for powerful runs and head shakes - hang on tight! Their light, flaky meat is excellent on the grill too. For best results, try slow-trolling or drifting live mullet or cut menhaden along channel edges. Keep your drag set light and let them run on the initial strike. Once hooked, these bronze beauties will test your gear and your skills.

Redfish

Spanish Mackerel

Spanish mackerel are speed demons that'll test your reflexes. Most run 2-4 pounds, but they can reach 12. You'll find schools busting bait near the surface, often giving themselves away with jumping fish and diving birds. Late summer is prime time as they migrate through. These fish are known for blistering runs and acrobatic jumps - light tackle is a blast. Their oily flesh is great smoked or grilled fresh too. To get in on the action, troll small spoons or Clark spoons behind planers. A local trick: when you see birds working, cut the engine and cast small jigs or gotcha plugs into the frenzy. Reel fast - Spanish mackerel love to chase down a fleeing bait.

Spanish Mackerel

Striped Bass

Striped bass are a real treat to catch in the Chesapeake. These powerful fish typically range from 20-40 pounds, with some monsters hitting 50+. You'll find them cruising near structure like reefs, channels, and drop-offs. Spring and fall are prime seasons as they migrate. Stripers put up an awesome fight - be ready for some serious runs! Their firm, white meat is delicious too. To land a big one, try live-lining spot or eels near bridge pilings or rocky points. Just remember to use circle hooks - it's the law and better for the fish. Keep an eye out for birds working the water - that's often a sign stripers are feeding on bait fish below.
